I am a research scientist and educator with a faculty position at Athabasca University, Canada’s Open University. I recently left my conventional faculty position at the University of Calgary but continue to do research in my lab with an adjunct appointment in Calgary. At this stage in my career, I wanted to try something different: start a new kind of research, in a new way that works with my position in a non “brick and mortar” university, and get immersed in online learning. I also want to develop some synthetic biology technologies and be more entrepreneurial. As a microbiologist concerned with treating bacterial infections, developing new antibiotics is a long and difficult battle. With synthetic biology, I hope the path to create biotechnologies and commercialize will be more immediate.
I am becoming very interested in open science, diy biology, and open access publication. Changes in these areas are happening and will change the face of science in the coming years.
This is my first attempt at starting a blog, I hope you will enjoy the content. The purpose of the blog is to share my passion for science, to create a space to share the latest, cutting edge discoveries, as well as to educate and to inspire.
